Network Name: Women of the ELCA

  1. Main Network Focus: The national women's association of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, a community of women engaged in ministry and action, committed to spiritual growth and fellowship to promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.
  2. Founded: Beginning January 1, 1988, The American Lutheran Church, The Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and The Lutheran Church in America, with shared beliefs and missions, officially formed the ELCA. All three churches trace their roots back through the mid-17th century, when early Lutherans came to America from Europe, settling in the Virgin Islands and the area now known as New York. Even before that, Martin Luther sought reform for the Catholic church in the 16th century, laying the framework for Lutheran beliefs.
